Anthony Scott’s eight-yard touchdown run late in the fourth quarter prevented Cedar Creek from suffering its third consecutive shutout.

However, the Eagles were unable to halt a quick College Station offense in a 73-7 loss — their 41st consecutive — in a District 12-5A Division I contest at Memorial Stadium on Friday.

Behind running back Trey Walton and wide receiver Kody Ballard, College Station (3-4 overall, 3-2 in district) jumped to a 21-0 advantage after one quarter and 49-0 at halftime.

Walton, a 6-foot, 185-pound junior, rushed for 191 yards on only eight carries. He spun away from tacklers on a 44-yard touchdown romp in the first quarter and added a second touchdown untouched for 31 yards on College Station’s next series. Walton played receiver last season.

Ballard, a 6-3, 165-pound junior, had four receptions for 76 yards. He took a sideline pass from quarterback Keaton Johnson and sprinted by the defense for a 17-yard touchdown in the second quarter. He caught a second touchdown for 39 yards from backup quarterback Noah Symank in the third.

"Both have a high ceiling,” College Station head coach Stoney Pryor said about Walton and Ballard. “(Walton) sees the game well, has good lateral movement, and he is strong for positive yardage. (Ballard) is tall, runs well, has a big wing span, and catches the ball well.”

Interchangeable at quarterback, Johnson and Symank combined to complete 9-of-11 passes for 155 yards and three touchdowns.

After losing its first four games, the Cougars have rebounded to win three consecutive games in district.

"We basically wanted to continue to improve,” Pryor said. “I have three goals for every game: win, get better, and do it with class.

"(After four straight losses), we needed to polish our own game and up our level. I thought our kids played hard. So, it was a good outcome for us.”

The College Station defense made a statement as well.

Defensive lineman Zahron Benford grabbed a Cedar Creek fumble one one bounce on the snap and romped 22 yards for a touchdown with 19 seconds remaining in the first half.

On Cedar Creek’s opening series in the third quarter, Zan Stevens intercepted quarterback Gregg Thompson and turned it into a pick six from 37 yards.

College Stations substitutes played much of the second half.

Mike Turner, the son of Jim Turner who was a running back at Boston College during the Doug Flutie era, dashed past the defense for a 74-yard touchdown run with less than two minutes left in the fourth. Turner, a senior, gained 128 yards on seven carries.

"I am glad that we were able to play a bunch of guys,” Pryor said. "As the season progresses, many of the starters may be dinged up, out, or even beaten out. I think it is crucial to get a number of players on the field, so that late-season roster adjustments don’t have negative implications on the field.”

Scott, Cedar Creek’s primary offensive weapon, proved to be durable and determined. He finished with 86 yards rushing on 19 carries.

Thompson completed two passes on Cedar Creek’s touchdown drive, 22 yards to sophomore Daniel Espinal and 13 yards to Dalton Whited.

Thompson finished 4-of-12 for 46 yards and had two interceptions.

Cedar Creek visits Anderson (6-0, 4-0) at 7:30 p.m. on Friday.
